SOCIAL MEDIA

VISION

Communication is a right. It defines us as human beings.
Without our need for social interaction, who are we? A global social infrastructure free from commercialism and power centralization must therefore be made possible. Aggregating social initiatives, progressive towards human rights, humble towards societal dynamics and focussed on human wellbeing: that is what a global social infrastructure must be. If we want to improve as human beings and as a society, then we must first redefine the way we communicate.
The ultimate goal for a social network should be to eventually become redundant in a persons life

WELLBEING

Social networks must be there to service people and not the other way around. It is therefore imperative that a social network is made in collaboration with users and with governments alike. It must aim for optimal results in a persons wellbeing even if that means that the social network becomes redundant to that person.
A social network must:
  • Promote offline interaction
  • Avoid applying psychological triggers
  • Refrain from drawing inactive users back
  • Remain politically neutral

PRIVACY

Privacy is the right to remain anonymous when not participating in illegal activities. The boundaries between privacy and public must be determined in collaboration with governments and users.
A social media organization must:
  • Apply privacy by design
  • Be pro active in applying the newest technologies to ensure online privacy
  • Give users the option for disclosure in data sharing and not be determined for them in advance
  • Give the right to be forgotten
  • Set most extensive privacy regulations as base line worldwide
  • Give clear explanations on data gathering and sharing
  • Only acquire information that are in context to the subject of the social network
  • Seek revenue in non privacy invading, more durable earning models
  • Provide transparency in data collection
  • Provide aliases for people with a vulnerable position

CHILDREN

Throughout the development of social capabilities, children go through different stages. If these stages are not carefully nurtured, social development of a child might be impaired.
A social media organization must:
  • Only construct and apply (children niche) social networks for educating children in social behaviour and the world
  • Seperate children < 13 y.o. from general social networks
  • Not apply personalization and profiling tactics for advertisement towards children

DEVELOPMENT

The development and maintenance for a social network is cost intensive subjected to the boundaries of the creators vision.
It is therefore advised that social media organizations:
  • Aim for open source development
  • Apply open ideation tools
  • Intensively work in collaboration with governments, universities, users and social experts to seek proper fit with society
